 FRANKFORT, Ky. (February 3, 2016) – Former Kentucky Senator Georgia Davis Powers will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort on Thursday, February 4thfrom 1:30-4:00 PM, followed by a funeral service and interment in Louisville on Friday, February 5th.

Senator Powers was the first African American to be elected to the Kentucky Senate in 1967, where she served as the Senator from the 33rd District with distinction for 21 years.

“Senator Powers will long be remembered for breaking down barriers to advance the cause of civil rights here in the Commonwealth and across our nation,” said Governor Bevin. “She boldly fought discrimination and dedicated her life to making her community and state better for all citizens.”

Senator Powers died on Saturday, January 30th. She was 92.

Governor Bevin has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise Thursday, February 4th through sundown Friday, February 5th in honor of Senator Powers.

Memorial Service in Capitol

The public is invited to visit the Capitol on Thursday, February 4th, where Senator Powers will lie in state from 1:30 PM until 4:00 PM ET. A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 PM.

Visitation and Funeral in Louisville

Visitation will be held on Thursday at St. Stephen Church, 1018 South 15th Street, Louisville, KY 40210, from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at11:00 AM Friday at St. Stephen Church, followed by a motorcade on the Georgia Davis Powers Freeway.  A service of committal will be held in Cave Hill Cemetery.
